Better Static Sites #

Since I started using Astro at work, I've published a few handy Astro tools for automating basic docs tasks. Some of these kinda sorta duplicate behavior you get for free from Starlight (though often a bit faster!). Some of these would probably be nice to add to a Starlight project, too, but I haven't tested that at all. If you try these out, let me know if you want me to add any extra features. Or if I need to fix any bugs.

Eventually these tools grew into Better Static Sites (BSS).

Widgets #

• CSS-only tabs

• CSS-only documentation sidebar

• Render an 'On this page' widget using all headers, even included Markdown fragments, Astro components, HTML content, and generated content (does not use the quite limited getHeaders() Astro API, instead relying on the site AST)

Conveniences #

• Generate Markdown pages and llms.txt indexes

• Render Mermaid diagrams server-side efficiently (without a local browser or playwright)

• Check internal links and images

• reStructuredText-style tables in Markdown

• reStructuredText-style refs in Astro Markdown
